2013

Working with Maxillofacial Prosthodontist, Dr. Jeff Rodney,  I added significant efficiencies to traditional maxillofacial procedures by incorporating 3D printing and scanning.

3D fabrication of facial prosthesis. I developed a start-to-finish workflow that incorporates digital technologies for the fabrication of facial prosthetics. This workflow can reduce the number of patient appointments and could have applications for remote fabrication of facial prostheses for patients in areas with limited access to care. We are currently treating a patient at the University of Michigan Hospital with this process.

Some highlights of the workflow include:

- A model of the patient’s face is obtained by taking pictures with a smartphone. No messy physical impression is taken for diagnostic cast.

- A “donor” nose is selected used to make a 3D printed wax-up.Type your paragraph here.

Medical Illustration. I made a series of illustrations of head and neck anatomy for a book published within the University of Michigan Medical School by Dr. David Brzezinski. Click for link to book. We are now working on mobile phone application for teaching head and neck anatomy.

Graduation. Received Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

Student Representative. Selected as the sole representative of my dental school to the Clinton Global Initiative University in Washington, DC. This meeting brings students from all over the world to jointly tackle issues relating to education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation, and public health.

Business Plan Competition. With Dr. Craig Yarborough as an advisor, I led a team of dental students in the concept-development of a dental financial management software. We won “Most Fundable Idea” at the 2013 Velocity Venture Capital Business Competition. Although we were unable to raise capital to create a functional proof of concept software, it was a tremendous learning experience for our entire team.

Student Representative. Voted by my dental school class to be the representative to the American Dental Association Political Action Committee. I organized a email campaign for key national dental issues, increased student membership by 100%, and responsible for logistics for national lobby day in Washington D.C.

Web Designing.  Before starting dental school I started a web-marketing service for local businesses in Stockton and Sacramento, California. I helped  small businesses develop an online marketing strategy and then I hired a web developer located in India to create the websites. I found all of my clients by cold-calling and also through facebook marketing. It was not a huge success financially speaking, but I made money for living expenses and gained experience in selling and negotiating.

3D printed Obturators. In order to make a surgical obturator, a maxillofacial prosthodontist must first take impressions of the patient, indicate the design, and send it to the laboratory for processing. This process can delay patient tumor removal for weeks. I developed a method to design and fabricate the surgical obturator directly from the medical imaging used to diagnose the tumor--instead of from an impression. This method saves patient and clinician time and can potentially help to expedite tumor removal. This technique is pending publication.

Hello, I am Ivan Chicchon. I am a senior prosthodontics resident, as well as a self-proclaimed artist and innovator. I love to serve as a resource and clinical provider for patients who have severely complex dental needs. I am especially interested in implant dentures and prosthetic maxillofacial reconstruction.

While I enjoy working in clinic, my passion lies in finding ways to incorporate emerging technology into clinical care to develop better treatment methods. I am skilled in 3D scan, design, and print technology and have found some very interesting clinical applications. I have had help from some amazing mentors and colleagues along the way and hope to continue fostering these collaborative relationships.

My goal is to always be collaborating, innovating, and dreaming big. If you have any questions, I would love to chat. My email is ichicchon@gmail.com. Thank you for viewing my CV.

Career Highlights

Started a small, cloud-based, CAD/CAM business, called Digital Face, which is a end-to-end service for dentists and surgeons for the fabrication of custom medical devices such as prosthetics and surgical guides. Our products have been used by the University of Michigan as well as private practice clinicians. Click here to visit Digital Face website.

Digital Face competed in 5 rounds, against 108 teams, and made it to the final round in the Michigan Business Challenge at the Ross School of Business.

Digital Face won the Dare-to-Dream Grant offered by the Zell Lurie Institute of Entrepreneurship.

3D Design Custom Dental Implant. Working with Drs. Gary Richards and Miroslav Tolar, I designed a custom dental implant. By taking the exact shape of an extracted tooth, this custom implant could be “press-fit” immediately after extraction of the tooth. I created this implant by scanning a mandible from the school’s collection, isolating the tooth with Mimics software, and modifying the tooth shape with Autodesk 3Ds Max Software. The project won first place in the Senior Research Competition.
